Most goals in a single La Liga game
Athletic Bilbao’s Agustin Sauto and Barcelona legend Laszlo Kubala have both scored seven goals in one La Liga match, while the former achieved the feat in 1931 the latter emulated the historic record in 1952. No one has come close to matching the record since.
Breaker of records Cristiano Ronaldo remains a goalscoring phenomenon and he would surely be aiming to at least match the historic record if not outright own it. Ronaldo has scored five goals on two separate occasions but he is yet to hit six in one match.
Most goals in a single European campaign
Ronaldo scored a Champions League record 17 goals in Real Madrid’s successful 2013/14 European campaign as they went on to win the coveted La Decima. The Portuguese’s tally is a record in a single Champions League campaign, however, he failed to overtake Radamel Falcao’s haul of 18 strikes in a single European campaign.
The Colombian racked up 18 strikes in the 2010/11 Europa League campaign for Porto and it remains the most goals in a single European season.
Most Pichichi trophies
Telmo Zarra was an Athletic Bilbao legend. He scored goals for fun and by the time he was done with the San Mames outfit, Zarra had racked up 251 league goals from just 277 outings. Even more remarkably, he had finished the Spanish league as the leading goalscorer in six different seasons, thereby winning six Pichichi trophies.
Trailing behind Zarra are La Liga heavyweights Alfredo De Stefano, Quini and Hugo Sanchez with five each, while Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskas won four. Cristiano Ronaldo is some distance away from Zarra with three wins but with the pace he is going, the Pichichi record may just be broken by the time he hangs his boots.
First Player to score 100 Champions League goals
At this point it has become a competition between Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to see who reaches first to 100 Champions League goals. Ronaldo, with 95 strikes, has a lead of one over his Argentine rival. The Portuguese has reached the tally in 135 appearances while turning out for Manchester United and Real Madrid, while Messi’s 94 goals have come in 113 matches – all for Barcelona.
This season is likely to be the one where both of them have a serious chance of getting their European tally into three figures. The question is who will be first.
Top goalscorer at the European Championship
Against all expectations, Portugal went on to win the 2016 European Championship after beating France in the final, 1-0. Antoine Griezmann finished as the tournament top goalscorer with six goals while Ronaldo notched three strikes.
However, the three goals from the Portuguese national team captain were enough for him to equal the all-time leading European Championship nine-goal tally of France legend Michel Platini. Ronaldo has expressed his desire to play into his 40s and if that indeed is the case, there is every possibility that the Portuguese will overhaul Platini’s record.
Looking at the ridiculous amount of records Cristiano Ronaldo has broken over his entire career, it won’t be a big surprise if the legendary Portuguese makes of all these records his own.
