Five father-son duos who played for the same club

Zinedine and Enzo Zidane (Real Madrid)

In Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey fixture against Cultural Leonesa last weekend, Los Blancos boss Zinedine Zidane introduced Enzo Zidane as a second half substitute in place of Isco, giving the 21-year-old his senior debut for the club. In the process, Enzo followed in his father’s footsteps to become the second Zidane to play for the Spanish giants.

He later scored a goal to make it a memorable debut. Zidane Sr. had played for Real Madrid from 2001 until his retirement in 2006 and scored a memorable volley in the 2002 Champions League final against Bayer Leverkusen. It remains one of the most abiding memories of his time as a player in the Spanish capital.

Johan Cruyff and Jordi Cruyff (Barcelona)

Johan joined the Catalan outfit from Ajax in 1973 and remained at the club until 1978 when he moved to Los Angeles Aztecs. During his time at the club Johan helped the club to a league title and a Spanish Cup. But his lasting legacy in the Catalonian capital would be his work in establishing La Masia academy that has helped churn out some of the greatest players of all-time. Johan would later return as a manager at the club.

Not as illustrious as his father, but Jordi had a two-year stint with Barcelona from 1994 until 1996 during which he scored 11 league goals and won the Spanish Super Cup in 1994.

Cesare and Paolo Maldini (AC Milan)

Cesare was a legendary figure at AC Milan and went on to make over 400 appearances for the first team. He was the captain of the Italian giants when they became the first team from the country to win the European Cup, in 1963.

Paolo would go on to establish the Maldini surname deeper into the Milanese folklore during the course of his 25 seasons for the first team. He went on to win a remarkable 26 trophies, five of which were European Cups.

Frank Lampard Sr. and Jr. (West Ham United)

Lampard Sr. had an illustrious career with West Ham United for whom he made more than 550 league appearances as a left-back.

His son followed his lead and started his football career at Upton Park and made his senior debut in 1995. He would play for another six years and make close to 150 league appearances before signing for Chelsea. At Chelsea, Frank Jr. went on to achieve legendary status with his haul of 147 goals and numerous trophies.

Arnor and Eidur Gudjohnsen (Valur)

Arnor played as a striker for Valur for two seasons – from 1998 until 2000. He also had stints in Belgium and France and went on to earn 73 caps for the Iceland national team.

Eidur started his career with Valur in 1994 before moving to Paris Saint-Germain that same year. He would go on to play for Chelsea, Barcelona and Monaco among other European outfits and has also earned 88 caps for the Iceland national team.

The father-son duo remain unique in the world of football, with a 17-year-old Eidur, replacing his 34-year-old father as a second half substitute on 24th April 1996 in an international fixture against Estonia.
