The Premier League witnessed the influx of star players in the summer. The league has suffered the departure of big players to Spain, especially in recent seasons and this also coincided with the inability of English teams to win the Champions League and Europa League since 2012 and 2013 respectively which were both won by Chelsea in those years.
Football is full of surprises. Premier League clubs ousted Spanish heavyweights to the signing of big name players. The signing of Paul Pogba made Manchester United the first English team to sign a player for a world record fee. The French midfielder made the switch from Italian club Juventus to Man United for £89M.The previous record fee of £80M and £85M saw the departure of Crisitano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale to Real Madrid in 2009 and 2013 respectively.
The clubs in the Premier League spent over £1 billion in the transfer market for the first time ever in the summer. Icons like Zlatan Ibrahimovic arrived in England and are already proving their worth in the arguably most demanding league in the world
This list comprises of players who have moved to the Premier League from other leagues and have made a good start to their Premier League careers.
Ilkay Gundogan (Manchester City)
A £20 million signing from Borussia Dortmund, the midfielder has what it takes to take the Premier League by storm. His intelligence and creativity in the City midfield will definitely add to oppositions woes. The 26-year-old German is already doing that with his two goals against Spanish giant Barcelona in the Champions League. He is wasting no time in becoming a key member of Pep Guardiola’s team.
Joel Matip (Liverpool)
The 25-year-old has been an integral part of Jurgen Klopp’s defence since arriving at Anfield as a free agent in the summer. He looks settled in the league already and is threat in the opposition box. He also has a goal to his name.
Granit Xhaka (Arsenal)
Apart from his red card in the match against Swansea, the 24-year-old Swiss midfielder has started justifying his £35M move from Borussia Monchengladbach. He returned to the line-up against Tottenham after serving a three-match ban and put on an impressive display. A string of matches will definitely settle him in England.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Manchester United)
Arriving as a free agent after a trophy-laden spell at French side PSG, Ibrahimovic, 35, is still one of the deadliest strikers in the world. He announced his arrival in the Premier League with three goals in his first two matches. However it hasn’t been always shiny for Zlatan in Manchester as a period of goal drought followed a brilliant start but he bounced back with a double against Swansea at the weekend and has scored eight goals so far. We can certainly expect more goals from him.
