In the 2016 summer transfer window Borussia Dortmund acquired the services of Ousmane Dembele after signing him on a five-year contract from French club Rennes. The youngster was much in demand and was also linked with a move to the English Premier League giants Liverpool, but the Black and Yellows were able to take him away to Germany.
And the German giants appear to have laid their hands on quite a talent.
The youngster generally starts on the right wing from where he cuts inside to find incisive passes or just runs past defenders to create goalscoring chances for his teammates or tries to do it all by himself. He is also not afraid to take on the opposition fullback and send a cross or two in.
Dembele comes across as a very gifted youngster who has a keen eye for goal and possesses exceptional dribbling skills.
Future at Borussia Dortmund
The 19-year-old played for 40 minutes in his first professional game for the Black and Yellows when he came on as a second half substitute in the German Supercup clash against Bayern Munich. He started his first Bundesliga game in Borussia Dortmund’s league opener against Mainz as his team went on to register a 2-1 win. Dembele also made an appearance for his new team during their next league game against RB Leipzig, albeit as a second half substitute.
Needless to say, the Frenchman appears to feature prominently in Thomas Tuchel’s plans and the way he has played there is every reason to believe that the club boss is happy with what he has seen of the youngster.
In the given circumstances, it is quite clear that Dembele has a bright future at the Westfalenstadion and all he needs is to keep his head down and work hard. There is a lot of competition for places at Borussia Dortmund especially with the extensive shopping the club did in the summer and as such Dembele cannot afford to relax.
Prospects with the national team
Dembele has risen through the ranks of the French football set up and has played for their Under-17 side right up to the national team, for who he made his debut earlier this month in a friendly against Italy. Dembele played about half an hour in the match that ended in a 3-1 win for his side.
He went on to make another substitute appearance in Les Bleus’ 2018 World Cup qualifying fixture against Belarus later that month.
There is a rising crop of extremely talented youngsters in the France national team and Dembele is at the forefront alongside forwards like Anthony Martial and Kingsley Coman.
