Records for most goals with one club across top four European leagues

Premier League – Wayne Rooney

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is now the player with most goals for one club in the history of the Premier League. He achieved this feat with his solitary strike at Anfield in 2015 when the Red Devils defeated their arch rivals 1 – 0. Rooney joined Old Trafford in the summer of 2004 from Merseyside club Everton and since then he has gone on to gain legendary status amongst the Manchester United faithful. He has played over 350 league games for the 20-time English champions with over 180 goals to his name, and he also overtook Thierry Henry’s haul of 175 strikes for Arsenal. Rooney also holds the record for most goals by any player in a Manchester United shirt.

Bundesliga – Gerd Muller

In the Bundesliga, Gerd Muller aka Der Bomber holds the record of most league goals by any player for one club. The prolific striker, who won all the major trophies at both club and international level, including the World Cup in 1974, scored 365 league goals for Bayern Munich during the course of his 15-year career in Bavaria before he moved to Fort Lauderdale Strikers in 1979 for two seasons in the twilight of his career.

La Liga – Lionel Messi

Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi holds the record for most league goals for one club in the Spanish top flight. The Argentina national team skipper, who has been a first team regular for the Catalan outfit since he debuted in 2004 under then manager Frank Rijkaard, has gone on to net 296 goals in 329 appearances thus far, which makes him the top scorer for any one club in La Liga. The previous record was held by Athletic Bilbao great Telmo Zarra, who had 251 goals from 277 league games for the Basques.

One of his very best goals in a Barcelona shirt.

Italian Serie A – Francesco Totti

The equivalent record in Italian Serie A is held by AS Roma captain Francesco Totti, who has notched up a phenomenal 244 goals from 592 appearances thus far. And even at the age of 39, he has shown no inclination to hang his boots, implying that he will further add to his already impressive tally.

And then there’s Totti, who is aging like Wolverine. What an absolute legend!
